Diet Habits: Do They Really Matter?

By Genevieve Cunningham

Everyone has diet habits. For some people, diet habits are well thought-out. They think about what they eat, when they eat, and how it affects their bodies. For others, diet habits just happen. If they're hungry, they eat. If they see something delicious, they try it. There's no specific plan. If you're in the latter group, it's possible that your diet habits affect you more than you realize. If we want to be healthy, we have to be conscious and deliberate about our decisions -- especially diet! If you're ready to get your health moving in the right direction, take a look at why diet habits matter, plus some tips for starting off right.

Why Does Diet Matter So Much?

You are what you eat. You've definitely heard this saying, but do you take it seriously? Food is used to fuel our bodies. If we eat tons of junk, we're not fueling our bodies properly, and we'll end up feeling sluggish and rundown. Eat nutritious foods, and your body will feel strong, healthy, and more capable of taking on life's challenges.

Some Helpful Diet Tips

  • Set a schedule - Schedules are important. The body likes routine, and when we eat on schedule, our bodies function more efficiently. It doesn't have to be rigid, but you should be eating close to the same times every day -- with a long period of fasting overnight.

  • Don't drink your calories - Coffee, tea, soda, juice. All of these drinks are especially delicious, but consuming too many still means taking in a large number of calories. If possible, don't drink your calories. Stick to water and save the calories for actual food.

  • Enjoy - It's important to enjoy the eating process. Do you really want to dread every meal? Of course not. And sticking to a strict, unappealing diet will only lead to failure. Instead, choose foods that are both healthy and delicious, and cut yourself some slack every once in a while.

Diet matters! And the good news is that your habits don't have to be perfect to make a difference. Use these tips to get your diet habits moving in the right direction, and your body and life will start making positive changes in no time at all.
