5 Healthy Habits for Every Youngster

By Brandi Goodman

Keeping kids healthy isn't an easy feat, but it needs to be done. Encouraging healthy habits in every youngster can help ensure they know how to maintain their well-being into adulthood. Teach your kids the importance of these five healthy habits so they can live well.

Start Every Morning With Breakfast

Fuel is needed to start the day outright. This means feeding your kids a healthy breakfast every morning to ensure they have the energy to make it through their day. Skip the fast-food lines and sugary breakfast cereal. Your child should be eating a protein-packed dish, such as eggs, a smoothie, or whole-grain toast and peanut butter.

Maintain a Sleep Routine

No matter if it's during the school year or still summertime, your kids should be maintaining a sleep routine. Sleep can be hard to come by as we age, so sticking to a typical wake and sleep time can help us get the shut-eye we need. Make sure your kids go to bed around the same time each night and wake when the sun does.

Make Exercise Fun

Exercise shouldn't feel like a chore that you never want to accomplish. It should be fun and keep you motivated to move. Make sure your kids are engaging in fun physical activity that makes them enjoy working out. Get up and dance with them in the living room. Play catch with them outside. Go on the swings. There are so many ways to enjoy exercise.

Wash Hands Regularly

It's incredibly important to teach your kids about proper handwashing techniques. Your hands should be washed regularly, especially after touching surfaces that others have come into contact with. Whenever they go out, they should make a habit of washing their hands -- or at least using hand sanitizer. It will prevent the spread of germs and keep them from getting sick.

Avoid Poor Outdoor Air Quality

Many respiratory problems stem from being outdoors when you really shouldn't. If your child already struggles with asthma or another breathing condition, it's best to keep them indoors when there is poor air quality outside. This means tracking air quality and pollen amounts with apps and websites and avoiding the outdoors when readings are in the red and even yellow. If your kids must be outdoors, make sure the time is limited.

These are just a few of the good habits your kids should utilize. With these healthy habits in their arsenal, your kiddos will have an easier time maintaining their health and well-being throughout their lifetime.
