Take Steps to Live Longer

By Tom Herrin

There was a time in which most people simply accepted their length of life as a fact that they had little control over.  While it is somewhat true, in today's world, we have much more control over many parts of our health.  Many modern advances in ways to support our health have enabled us to have a lot more input into our overall health.  We are now able to make choices that may allow us to lengthen our lives and increase the quality of our health.  We simply must be willing to educate ourselves and follow whatever plan we make.

Take Control over Stress

No matter who we are or where we live, stress can take a toll on our lives.  It can rob us of our peace and tranquility.  Stress can raise blood pressure and weaken our immune system.  On the other hand, managing stress may help us to rest better and raise our immunities.  We may be able to think clearer and make better decisions.  Exercise can always help us to relieve stress.  Many people choose various types of meditation to reduce their stress.  There are other things as well, but the key is for us to take control over the things that cause our stress.

Take Advantage of Screenings

With the advancements in many of the things we can do to protect ourselves from various health problems, screenings can now work wonders.  Blood pressure checks are available at most pharmacies.  Many mobile units offer screenings for several different kinds of possible health issues.  Skin cancer screenings can now enable us to take early actions to help avoid some serious conditions that may be the result of too much sun exposure.  As a result of giving blood, we can monitor our cholesterol levels to help us take action against circulatory issues.

Volunteer for Something

We live in a world that is very diverse.  It is important that we become part of our community because its success may depend on us.  By volunteering, we can provide a service for others who are unable to do for themselves.  I really enjoy the feeling I get when I volunteer.  It is extremely fulfilling.  You will see many older individuals thriving as they serve others.  It can help us to enrich our lives and, as a result, extend it.  If living longer is a goal for you, volunteer in your community.
