Simple Ways to Practice Self Care

By Sandy Schroeder

Most of us wind up taking care of ourselves after everyone else. With work and family needs, plus home tasks, self care may easily get lost in the shuffle.

To practice ongoing self care that makes you feel healthy and happy in mind, body and soul really begins with small rituals, according to Real Simple.

Here are some of their suggestions.

Feed your body well - All of us give in to our favorite desserts sometimes, but overall it's good to balance them with healthy foods that nourish the body. Focus on the fresh fruits and vegetables that you enjoy and add the poultry, fish, and lean meats that your family likes. Then add nuts, low fat dairy and olive oil to your shopping list. Also keep healthy snacks on hand and never shop when you are hungry.

Say no and mean It - It can be hard to set boundaries with close friends and family, but they really serve to protect each person's rights and make daily life work. Too often we say yes when we mean no, and then we are frustrated or angry as situations play out. When you wind up living your life to appease others, your own needs and desires frequently get very little attention. You may feel anxious when you have to tell someone no, but that's much wiser than letting others take charge. If you say no, you will discover people often become more reasonable and respect you for taking a stand.

Get lost in nature - When the day has been bad and the week has been impossible, head out to your favorite, park, beach, river or mountain and let nature take over. Surrounding yourself with nature can energize your body, calm your nerves and elevate your mood. If you love to walk in the woods, dig in the garden or hike in the hills, take the time to make it happen. Later everything else might look better.

Make sleep a priority - Doctors now tell us most people need eight hours of sleep every night to maintain good health.  Many of us skate by on six or seven hours of sleep, but our mind and body take the hits. Establish a regular bedtime, create simple sleep rituals, and toss all of the electronics out of your bedroom. You will feel the difference next day when you think clearly and still fill energetic in the evening.

This is just a starter list for your self care. Think of all the little things that you enjoy. It could be fresh leafy green salads, quiet mornings in the park, or reading on the patio. Make room for all of them and start enjoying life more.
