How to Sleep Soundly in All Seasons

By Brandi Goodman

Sleep can be difficult to come by on its own. Add in the weather you're facing and you may be even more likely to toss and turn all night. Whether it's too hot, too cold, too windy, or otherwise, the weather can play a major role in how well -- or not -- you sleep. Sleep soundly in all seasons with a few tips in mind.

Winter

The winter tends to be a harsh season. The cold around you can make it hard to sleep as you lie in bed shivering. The dryness of the air can make it difficult to breathe easily and leave your nose feeling stuffy. It's important to set your bedroom temperature to something you can handle -- usually an average of 65 degrees is recommended. You may also want to set a humidifier to keep your air moist and make breathing easier.

Spring

The spring isn't as harsh, but it does have its setbacks. One day, you may experience a hard rain with a sound that explodes against your rooftop. It's not easy to sleep with that sound. The next night, it may be back to a winter cold. Wait another day and it could be quite warm. Keeping that inside temperature set right will be a huge help. For the noise, you can try sleeping with noise-canceling headphones. At the very least, keep a white noise machine or fan in the room that can help drown out the sounds of the season.

Summer

The summer tends to be harsh as well when it comes to heat. Lots of people find it difficult to sleep because it's far too hot to do so. Not to mention, the sun shines bright and early. Be sure to take a cool shower before bed to lower your body temperature and keep a fan or air conditioner in your room. You may also want to sleep with a light sheet rather than the thick comforter you may be used to using. Get blackout curtains that can keep the sunshine out for as long as possible if you have any hope of sleeping in.

Fall

The fall season is much like the spring, though the temperatures start to fall instead of rise. You'll have unusually warm days, extremely cold ones, and some in between. Adjusting your sleep routine a bit may be necessary depending on which type of day you're experiencing.

The weather doesn't have to hinder your sleep experience. Keep some tips in mind and you'll be more likely to drift off at night without the discomfort you normally face. Keep yourself as cool, calm, and ready for sleep as possible and you can get the Zzz's you need no matter the season.
