Enjoy Weightlifting With These Tips

By Rachel Carver

For many reasons, the idea of spending any time lifting weights or strength training might make you cringe. Maybe you had a bad experience with one of these workouts, or maybe trying to think about all of the different exercises strength training involves is overwhelming.

The CDC recommends at least two days of strength training per week. This training should work all major muscle groups, including glutes, hamstrings, and shoulders. However, you are setting yourself up for failure if you force yourself to train and despise everything you do.

Use these tips to enjoy weightlifting. The results might surprise you.

Find Your Why

The first part of trying anything new is to figure out the reason for starting it in the first place. Do you want to build muscle? Do you want to have more energy to play with your kids? Remember, these results will take time and consistency. Focusing on your "why" will help you keep going even if you do not see results right away.

Try Different Training Styles

You might dislike strength training because you have not found a style that works for you. Experiment with different styles, including:

  • Aiming to increase strength with squats, bench presses, and deadlifts
  • Trying to work multiple muscle groups through a CrossFit class that incorporates circuit training
  • Creating a workout with just your bodyweight

Take a Class

Virtual or in-person classes can encourage you to keep going. You can also learn new techniques from others with similar goals. Classes will often combine strength training with other exercises such as yoga. This approach keeps your training interesting and fun.

Find a Partner

Friends can help you keep going when you feel like quitting. They are also doing the same activities with you and can understand your challenges and share your triumphs.

Train to Music

Music is a great distraction. Put together your favorite playlist and jam while you train. Listening to your favorite songs will help the time pass quickly.

Mix it Up

A great way to keep things interesting is to change your workouts. Swap your dumbbell for a kettlebell. If your budget allows, purchase a new piece of workout equipment such as a prowler sled.

Here are some other tools to consider, depending on whether you work out at home or go to the gym:

  • Resistance bands
  • Medicine balls
  • Suspension trainers
  • Chains
  • Sliders

Learn a Skill

Conquering something new can keep you motivated. Choose a new exercise to learn, and continue adding new ones until you have a variety of them to rotate. Here are some to consider:

  • Kettlebell swings
  • Handstand
  • Burpee
  • Barbell squat

Weightlifting is a great way to burn calories and get in shape, and you can use these tips to get the most out of it.
