Maintaining an Exercise Routine in the Heat
By Brandi Goodman
The warm sunshine may be inviting you outdoors for exercise, but you need to be careful when you make this plan. The heat can quickly cause dehydration and fatigue if you don't use caution. Keep some things in mind when trying to maintain an exercise routine in the heat so you stay healthy and feeling well.
Stay Hydrated
It's incredibly important that you stay hydrated before, during, and after your workout. This is even more necessary when you're exercising outdoors in the hot sun. The heat can quickly leave you feeling exhausted and overwhelmed. Keep a chilled bottle with you or bring along a cooler. Water left out in the sun will get hot fast and not be pleasant to drink.
Use the Water
Water is great for exercise. Swim laps at your local pool. Head to the beach for some time spent swimming. Use your own pool at home if you have one. Working out in the water is great for joint health and can keep you fit without exacerbating your inflammation and aches. You can even try a water aerobics class at a fitness center nearby.
Exercise in the Morning Hours
The daytime hours tend to be the hottest. Working out at this time can drain your energy quickly and be bad for your skin. Exercise in the morning hours when it's still cool outside so you can make the best of the situation.
Wear Moisture-Wicking Clothing
Don't wear heavy cotton or a full tracksuit to work out outdoors. You should opt for lightweight, moisture-wicking clothing instead. It will help to keep you cool and comfortable. Start with moisture-wicking socks and undergarments for a truly chilled feel.
Use a Cooling Towel
Placing a cooling towel around the back of your neck can help tremendously. It can cool you down quickly when you're feeling overheated. Lots of people use them after a workout is finished. As long as you have a bottle of water you can pour over the towel before wringing it out and applying, you'll be good to go. Wear it during the car ride home without worrying about water dripping from pouring the bottle directly over yourself.
An outdoor exercise routine is fine to maintain in the summer. You just have to be aware that the heat can fatigue you much more quickly and make sure you're making the appropriate accommodations. Get out and enjoy your exercise!
