Staying Healthy for Summer Sports
By Donna Stark
Because spring weather can be messy, confusing, and hard to count on, many athletes look forward to the consistent temperatures of summer. But just because summer has more stable temperatures doesn't mean you don't need to prepare for it as well. Summer heat can affect the way an athlete's body functions and increase the risk of injury if safety measures aren't taken. Here are some tips from your local chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic on how to stay as healthy as you can while playing your favorite sports.
Transition Slowly
It sure is tempting to grab your gear and give it your all when the weather works in your favor, but it may be better if you transition to the hotter temperatures a bit more slowly. Your body may need the extra time to acclimate to the heat and humidity, and by taking the time to get used to the change in weather, you can reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses, such as heat cramps, exhaustion, and stroke.
Stay Hydrated
Dehydration is a serious threat during the summer so make sure you are drinking the recommended amount of water every day, which for most people, is at least half their body weight in ounces. You may also need to drink more if you are exerting more energy than usual or sweating a lot. To be on the safe side, always carry more water than you think you will need and take frequent breaks during your workouts.
Lighten Up
If you expect to be physically active outdoors, choose light-colored clothing made from moisture-wicking material. Dark colors and cotton fabrics are known to absorb heat and sweat which is the exact opposite of what your body needs.
Protect Your Body
Don't forget to protect your skin and eyes from the potentially damaging rays of the sun with sunscreen and sunglasses. Apply sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 before you head outside and reapply often, and wear sunglasses to protect against both UVA and UVB rays. Wearing a hat is a great way to protect your skin and eyes as well!
