Bread Does Not Have to Be an Enemy to Good Health
By Tom Herrin
While at one time, many people seemed to think that no meal could be complete if it did not contain bread. That kind of thinking changed considerably over the last few years. Much of the white bread on the shelves is deplete of many nutrients and fiber that is necessary to maintain good health. As a result, instances of colon cancer rose accordingly. Many who have problems with blood sugar also find it best to avoid bread. We are fortunate in that it doesn't all have to be this way. There are some good products available that can provide good sources of fiber as well as great nutrition overall. For those who watch their blood sugar, there are some good options there.
Whole Wheat Bread
Following the discovery of the negative effects of the processed flour on health, new standards required the manufacturing of bread with enriched wheat flour. Whole wheat bread is a pretty good choice though care should be taken to read the labels to be certain they contain some whole grains. Even enriched bread can have insufficient nutrients, and we need to be sure what we eat contains the best nutrients available. Whole wheat can help to make certain that we have the fiber we need.
Oat Bread Is Better Than It Sounds
Many times, when we hear about anything containing oats, we think of it as being bland. This is part of an unnecessarily bad reputation that has followed oats. I really enjoy oats and like the fact that they are so well known for their benefits in managing cholesterol. This still holds true when they are in bread. This same fiber can also help us to feel fuller for longer. Oat bread may be a little higher in calories than some others, but it has lots of protein as well as some great nutrients.
Let Your Bread Taste Good
We may as well face it, none of us wants to eat food that doesn't taste good. The same should apply to bread. Read the labels and find something that appeals to you. Try it for taste. If you don't like it, try another one. There are quite a few to choose from, and you will surely find something that meets your needs. We just need to determine what is important to us.
