3 Ways to Start a Workout Habit That Sticks
By Genevieve Cunningham
Do you work out? Most people know that exercise is important, but not everyone follows through on a workout plan. And honestly, it's easy to see why. Working out is hard. It takes time and focus and effort. In our constantly busy lives, it can be hard to make it a priority. And if exercise isn't one of your passions, it's especially easy to let it fall by the wayside. Luckily, there are ways to make working out easier, and ways to really make the habit stick. If you need help creating a lasting workout habit, take a look at these tips for getting started.
Start Really Slowly
Any time you feel motivated to start something new -- especially when it comes to health -- it's tempting to jump in with all your might. You want to join the local gym and show up every day and take every interesting class. While this kind of motivation is fun, it doesn't last. When the newness wears off, you'll just be exhausted! Instead, start your workout habit really slowly. Work out for five minutes every day. Just stretch and walk. Then work up to 10 minutes -- and then more and more and more. This gives the workout a chance to become a natural part of your life, which makes it far more likely to stick long-term.
Start With Something Really Fun
It can also be a really good idea to start your new habit off with a lot of fun. What kind of exercise sounds like fun? Kickboxing? Swimming? Biking? Choose an activity that sounds fun and go for it. If it's not as much fun as you thought, try something else. If you're having fun during your workout, you're more likely to stick with it and make it part of your life for the long haul.
Start With a Buddy
If you need a little push getting started, consider starting with a friend. Friends make everything better. Go to a class together, take a walk together, or do something else fun. You can help push each other to keep going -- or just to show up at all! And with a friend, you're more likely to stick with it in order to not let the other person down. Motivation, fun, and accountability? What better way to get your workout routine started off on the right foot?
Getting started on a workout plan can definitely be challenging. It can feel like so much work, and it doesn't always sound fun. But with the right approach, you can create a routine that sticks. Use these tips to get started, and you'll be moving your body daily in no time at all.
