Milk Can Still Make a Contribution to Your Diet
By Tom Herrin
No matter what we do, some things always come back to us. In the case of milk, we all relied on it when we were babies. As time went on, we consumed more of other kinds of foods and probably drank less milk. Even as school children, it was a part of every meal served in school cafeterias. The basic idea was for us to be able to grow strong and healthy. Milk is usually considered to be a good source of calcium needed as well as protein. It is sometimes referred to as one of the complete foods.
There Are Still Good Things
Some of us tend to reduce the amount of milk we drink once we reach adulthood. Some even eliminate it completely. When this happens, we may have to rely on some other foods or supplements to supply our needs. Not only does milk contain calcium, but it also has a fair amount of magnesium and potassium. These are necessary for good maintenance of our bones and teeth. It also provides a great deal of protein necessary for building and maintaining muscles. Those who do much higher intensity exercise will likely need to make sure they drink milk in order to prevent too much loss of muscle.
Some Have Issues With Milk
Not everyone is able to drink milk. Many have some kind of sensitivities to cows' milk. It may be due to the lactose, or natural sugar, or it may be due to some of the proteins. Protein often tends to be a source of allergies in many foods. Some producers have been able to offer milk without one kind of protein that is believed to cause people to have problems. Another option for some who cannot tolerate milk from cows is almond milk. For the most part, it can be used as a substitute. It has a much higher amount of calcium.
Milk Does Not Have Everything
Some people believe that milk contains iron, but cows' milk does not have it naturally. For baby formulas, it is usually added. If you are in need of more iron, you may be able to take in plenty by eating fortified breakfast cereal. Some of them have high amounts of iron. It is always best to simply read the labels to find out what is contained. You can then add milk to complete your meal. Cereal is my favorite breakfast food, and I make every effort to see that it has the things that I need.
