Lifetime Sports May Be More Exercise, Less Effort
By Tom Herrin
Most of the time, when we think in terms of getting more exercise, we think of long sessions of boredom. That is, going methodically through a routine that we may feel has no end. For those who are not really into a particular type of activity, that seems to be the way it goes. We may dread every minute of the session but know it is something we need. A better way of getting the same thing accomplished may be to participate in some kind of lifetime sport. They may be of much higher interest and provide us with some very measurable objectives. As we do so, we may see our overall physical condition improve dramatically.
What Is a Lifetime Sport?
We are all familiar with exercise. Some of us love any kind we can do, while others simply don't like the thought of it. We all know what sports are as well, but we often think of sports as something that is highly organized with intense competition. Lifetime sports may include some of those really competitive activities, but they may be much more. When we use the term "lifetime," we are referring to something that can do just that. The objective is to provide some options that may interest people. Higher interest translates into greater motivation. In terms of physical activity, this means we will experience more of it.
Identify Your Goals
We all have different goals when we decide to become more active. For some, it may be to gain more strength. For others, it may be to increase mobility or range of motion. The most common reason is probably to manage weight and maintain the heart. It is usually suggested that we should strive to get 30 minutes per day of moderate exercise at least five days per week. This may be enough for us to see noticeable improvement yet avoid overtaxing our bodies and getting injuries. Once we get going, we may have a desire to ramp up our program as we go.
There Are Plenty of Options
Once you make a decision to begin participating in a sport, you must make some choices. If you want aggressive competition, there are leagues for basketball, soccer, softball, volleyball, and so on. There are also running and biking clubs. If you want to socialize, there are all kinds of dance groups. There is still golf, tennis, bowling, archery, and lots of others. It is up to you to decide. The main thing is to choose something you will enjoy and use to improve health.
