Tips for Maintaining Good Mental Health
By Paul Rothbart
Life can be incredibly stressful. It seems there is always something to worry about. Job, family, your home, even what's going on in the world. With all the anxiety, it's no wonder maintaining good mental health can be so challenging. Mental health is every bit as important, if not more so, than physical health. The mind and body are linked and one affects the other. It is possible to stay mentally healthy. Here are some tips to help you do just that.
Care for Yourself
The mind needs care just as the body does. Eating well is one of the best things you can do for mental health. Avoid excess fats and sugars and choose nutrient-dense. Omega-3 fatty acids are excellent for the brain. Drink plenty of water as dehydration can exacerbate stress. Make sure to get at least 8-9 hours of solid sleep each night. Exercise is not just for the body. Improved blood flow is good for the brain and better physical health gives you one less thing to be anxious about.
Find Ways to Manage Stress
While stress is certainly real, it is often a state of mind. There are many ways people manage stress. You can try yoga or meditation. Doing it first thing in the morning can help you keep a calm mind throughout your daily activities. Pets are excellent stress-relievers. Taking your dog for a walk or playing with a pet gets you outside of yourself. Nature walks can also be calming and help quiet the mind. Humor is one of the best ways to reduce anxiety and stress. Laugh with friends, watch your favorite comedies. It may well be the best medicine.
Change Up Your Routine
It can be so easy to slip into a rut and go through the same routine day after day. While it may be efficient, it can also create drudgery and boredom and affect mental health. Change things up once in a while. Do morning chores in the afternoon or vice versa. Try some new recipes when cooking meals. Even taking a different route to work can be refreshing and recharge your mind. Variety is the spice of life and can be good for mental health.
Don't Hesitate to Get Help
If your stress and anxiety are overwhelming, get help from a mental health professional. There is no shame in seeking treatment. Depression is common and can be devastating. Don't suffer with it. Find a good therapist.
While navigating the twisty roads of daily living, mental health can sometimes take a hit. Try these tips to maintain good mental health and if you need professional help, get it.
