The Exotic, Healthy Mango

By Paul Rothbart

Exotic, tropical fruits are often people's favorite. With unique textures and flavors, these fruits can be used in sweet or savory cooking, and taste good on their own. One of the most popular tropical fruits is the mango, which is known in some circles as the "king of fruit." Mangoes are sweet and tangy, easy to peel, and as it turns out, very healthy. They have several health benefits to go along with their flavor.

Good for Skin and Hair

Mangoes are rich in Vitamins A and C. Research has linked Vitamin A deficiency to hair loss. The subcutaneous glands are attached to hair follicles and help moisturize hair and keep it healthy. Vitamin A helps with the development and maintenance of these glands as well as hair itself and skin. The Vitamin C in mangoes helps to produce collagen, which keeps the skin elastic and prevents sagging and wrinkling. One cup of mango has nearly 75 percent of the recommended daily allowance of Vitamin C.

They May Help Prevent Cancer

Mangoes contain many varieties of plant compounds known as polyphenols. These are antioxidants that protect the DNA of the body's cells from free radicals that can damage them and form cancer cells. The polyphenols in mangoes can also help prevent type 2 diabetes. Animal studies have discovered that the antioxidants in mangoes suppressed breast cancer cell growth.

Immune System Health

The Vitamin A in mangoes is also good for the immune system. A single cup contains about 25 percent of the recommended daily allowance of this vital nutrient. The immune system requires Vitamin A to produce white blood cells and function properly. People with Vitamin A deficiencies have been found to be more susceptible to illness and disease.

They Are Good for Eye Health

Other antioxidants found in abundance in mangoes are lutein and zeaxanthin. These compounds boost eye health in several ways. First, they protect the lenses and retinas of your eyes. This can reduce the effect of glare on the eyes as well as improve range and help the eyes recover more quickly from intense light. These antioxidants also contribute to protection from UV rays, which can be very harmful to the eyes. Additionally, they help fight macular degeneration and the growth of cataracts.

Regulation of Blood Sugar

Despite the fact that they do contain a significant amount of sugar, mangoes can actually help lower glucose content in the blood. A number of studies have demonstrated this. It's believed that the antioxidants in mangoes reduce insulin resistance and help regulate blood sugar levels.

Tropical fruits are some of the most delicious. Mangoes rank high on most people's lists. They provide significant health benefits as well as good taste. Adding mangoes to your diet is a good idea.
