Walk in the Rain With These Tips

By Rachel Carver

Fall has arrived. This means cooler temperatures and unpredictable weather. As the weather cools, your opportunities to walk outdoors will decrease. But there are some ways to keep walking through rainy fall weather.

Invest in a Good Raincoat

Fall rain feels different than spring rain. You'll want a raincoat that will keep you warm and dry. Umbrellas are nice for a quick trip from the parking lot to the office. But they can get in the way during a dedicated walking workout. Free up your arms by wearing the right raincoat with a hood to keep your head dry.

If you want to leave the house prepared, choose a disposable poncho that fits into your jacket pocket. This temporary option is cheap and can help you stay dry. A disposable poncho also works well if you are participating in a fall race and do not want to wear a bulky, traditional raincoat.

Layer Up

Layering is a great option for regular walkers. Invest in a thin rain jacket and waterproof pants that can be worn alone in milder temperatures. As the weather cools, you can add additional layers.

Here's how to layer up when it is cold and rainy.

  • Start with a base layer that keeps moisture away and your body comfortable
  • Wear merino wool or fleece items over this first layer during chilly walks
  • Top off your layers with waterproof pants and a rain jacket to stay dry during extended walks in the rain

Remember Your Feet

Protecting your feet from the rain is also important. Find some waterproof walking or running shoes to keep your feet drier. Depending on your route, you also might want to consider adding waterproof socks or gaiters. Gaiters can be useful if you plan to walk or hike often in wet weather.

Choose Your Route

Your regular walking route might not be the best option when it rains. Busy streets will splash you. Underpasses or drainage areas will collect water, causing you to end your walk or get your feet wet. And dirt trails get muddy when it rains, making navigation challenging.

Choose a different route such as a quiet neighborhood sidewalk or a path through a local park. Find terrain that will be safer during rainy weather.

Preparing for the weather will allow you to still enjoy outdoor benefits of outdoor walking such as improved mood and increased energy. And looking for an alternative route might even help you discover your next favorite walk path.
