Artificial Sweeteners Can Be Useful
By Tom Herrin
A lot of the time, we find ourselves doubting the usefulness of many products. We often take for granted the research involved in making these things work. For many years, there was a considerable effort to develop something that could be a suitable substitute for sugar. Some considered sugar to be an evil that could consume us. I once read that sugar, if it was anything but what it was, would be banned from sales because of the bad things associated with it. While this may not be the case, there have been plenty of reasons to find a useful alternative. When it was finally developed over a hundred years ago, it was a major accomplishment.
A Lifeline for Diabetics
The most practical reason for sugar substitutes is for use by diabetics. For many years they were dependent upon their own ability to stay away from sugars. Of course, until the development of an insulin product that could be taken daily, their lives were almost guaranteed to be shortened. Once they had insulin, they still had to deal with sugar products that would upset the balance of their systems. The introduction of artificial sweeteners dramatically changed the way they could live. They are the real beneficiary of these products, and they are a great help.
Friend of Dieters?
Those who are always trying to lose, or manage, weight may feel that sugar substitutes are for them. This may be secondary, but some individuals have gone to using them as much as possible. A simple stroll through the drink aisles of a grocery store will reveal how popular sugar-free drinks are. While many people consume them, there is still some concern about the safety of these products for everyone. One thing for sure is that drinking things that are sugar-free may help to protect against tooth decay.
Sugar Is Not a Demon
Even though there are some bad things associated with sugar, it is not that bad. Like so many other things, it is our lack of self-control that can make it a problem for most. Except for diabetics, we can safely use sugar if we just consume it in small doses. An occasional sweet treat is not all bad. We need to be able to leave it at that, so we don't have to use artificial sweeteners. They have become a great resource, though.
