Work Fatigue: Maintain Health When You've Had Enough
By Genevieve Cunningham
Work can be so good for us. It sustains us financially, and oftentimes, it also fulfills a need within us. It gives us purpose and direction, and that is definitely a good thing! But let's not kid ourselves; work can also be really tough. There are definitely times when we've just had enough of the grind. We begin to feel exhausted and completely burned out. Does this sound just a little bit too familiar? If you're feeling a bit of work fatigue, take a look at these tips for easing the fatigue and maintaining better physical and mental health through it all.
Pace Yourself
In most cases, work is not a race. Yes, there are times when we have to meet deadlines or rush to finish a big project, but this work flow shouldn't be constant. It's not sustainable! Instead, pace yourself at work. Set attainable goals. Set timelines that you can actually stick with. And when the day is over, leave work at work. If you work from home, leave your designated office space and don't think about it again until tomorrow. Is this difficult? It can be tough to set these boundaries if you're used to overworking yourself, but the positive changes to your health and perspective on work will most definitely be worth it.
Reset Your Mindset
Sometimes we feel fatigued simply because of a negative mindset. As you go throughout your day, listen to the internal dialogue going on in your head. Are you telling yourself how tired you are or how much you dislike your job? Are you hanging around people who always have something bad to say about work? These situations affect you more than you realize. Sit down and make a list of the good aspects of your job and revisit them when your morale begins to fade. Maintaining a positive mindset can have a significant impact on your work relationship.
Take Some Time
If you're really feeling fatigued about work, it's OK to take some time off. Even a day or two may be enough to change your feelings. We have to find a healthy balance between work and life. You don't even have to wait until you feel fatigued to take time off! Regularly taking some time might help prevent that burned out feeling. Allow yourself time away from the office, and you will definitely feel better about your entire work -- and life -- experiences.
If you're starting to feel exhausted about work, it's time to take action. We have to work, so there's no reason to let ourselves feel bad or negative about it. Use these tips to handle your feelings and emotions about work, and get back to feeling your best and most productive in no time at all.
