Keep Moving for Your Long-Term Health

By Stephen R. Farris

Do you find it difficult to schedule time for exercise each day? You're not alone, as most folks seem to have the same problem. Research studies suggest that we get at least 15 minutes of vigorous exercise each day, yet even finding time for that small amount of time can be challenging.

Most of the reason is due to our daily schedule. We rush to get out of bed each day, get dressed, grab a quick back, hassle with traffic while trying to get to work on time, and rush right into our job and deal with a desk full of overdue assignments. Same can go for our children going to school. There's simply not enough time to add anything else. Or is there?

If you want to get healthy and avoid settling for a sedentary lifestyle, then making a change in your schedule is a must. The first thing is to sit down and look at your daily routine. Find things you can change, going to bed early (or at least the same time each night), getting up early (the same time each day), meal prep the day or night before, or on the weekends for the upcoming week. Find a different route to work or school that's less congested. Get to work earlier.

If you can make changes to your daily routine, then you should be able to find at least 15 minutes of time to set aside for exercise. Even if it's a few changes, you'll still have some extra time. Some of these changes may not slow your routine. In other words, you could work in some exercise with them, especially if you have a dog, or like to watch TV for relaxation.

Here's a couple of examples on how to implement exercise into your regular routine.

Adopt a Pet

A pet can keep you company, and help you get exercise at the same time. If you don't have a pet, such as a dog, you can always visit your local animal shelter and adopt one. Taking your dog for a walk is a plus for the both of you, and it doesn't require that much time.

Dance the Night Away

While you're unwinding at home, cooking dinner for the family, or hanging out in the living room, why not turn the TV off and turn up the music. Do a little dance, and get down to burning a few calories while having fun and still being able to finish cooking. It doesn't have to be every night, or it could be if you want. The point is that you're moving. And movement is a good thing.
