Chiropractic Solutions for Extended Driving Hours

By Brandi Goodman

Whether you drive for a living and spend hours at a time on the road, or you're simply heading out on a road trip, there are some chiropractic tips you need to keep in mind. Long hours spent in the vehicle can quickly lead to back pain if you aren't taking precautions. These chiropractic solutions can help you make it through the extended time spent in your car or truck.

Stop the Slouch

It might feel right at the moment to slouch in your seat and sit with relaxed posture. This can quickly lead to lower back pain, though. You should remain upright with your back straight if you have any hope of keeping pain out of the equation. Sitting slouched while you go over hard bumps can really be detrimental to your spine. Keep your core engaged and your back straight to handle any uneven terrain more easily. It might also be wise to use a lumbar support cushion behind your back to really ensure you're sitting correctly for the entire duration of your trip.

Stretch When You Stop

If you come to a stop sign or stoplight and have a few seconds to stretch, take it! You should be stretching out your back and lower body, in particular, any chance you get. It will help to keep the blood flowing and joints from getting stiff and sore. When you can, you'll want to completely get out of the vehicle and stretch out well, but at least stretching a bit at a stop can help ease some of your discomfort.

Drink Water, Not Caffeine

It may be tempting to get an energy drink or coffee to help make you through your long driving hours. Caffeine can make you crash quickly, though. Plus, it won't do much good for your joint health. You need to continue drinking water while you drive to get energy from a valid source. It will also help keep your joints flexible and prevent stiffness from setting in so easily.

Even a short drive can leave you feeling sore if you aren't taking precautions. Being stuck in a vehicle for hours can be even worse on your back and body. Be sure you're keeping these chiropractic solutions in mind so you can make the most of your driving time and return home without pain. If you do end up feeling uncomfortable and sore after a long drive, it's wise to stop in at The Joint Chiropractic for an adjustment.
