Stocking Your Car for Winter Safety

By Donna Stark

It never hurts to be prepared in life, and that couldn't be truer than when winter comes along. If you need to drive in inclement weather, no matter how severe it is, your best bet for safety is to stash some emergency supplies in the back of your car. Why? Well, being prepared for the worst is the best way to survive an emergency unscathed. Check out the following list of supplies that your local chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic recommend for drivers of all ages.

Snow Tools

Does the area you live in get a lot of snow and ice? If so, the most important tools to keep in your car are an ice scraper and a snow brush. You will want to make sure you wipe off your entire care before you start driving. Why? Well, because it's dangerous to keep snow and ice on your car. Not only will your view be obstructed, but the snow and ice could turn into flying projectiles headed for the cars behind you as well.

Blankets

Got any extra blankets in your linen closet at home? If you do, grab a couple and load them in your car during the winter months, and if you don't, consider purchasing a few. Blankets are great to have because it will get cold really fast if you are stranded or if your car won't start.

First Aid Supplies

A first-aid kit is another necessity that every car should have. From bandages to alcohol wipes to bug spray to tweezers for splinters, you'll be surprised at how handy it is to have these items nearby. Just be sure to keep this kit in your car year-round. This isn't only for the winter season.

Roadside Tools

Emergency flares, jumper cables, rock salt, flashlights, and a small tool kit will make any roadside emergency easy to take care of. Learn how to use the tools and how to navigate different scenarios so you don't have to depend on strangers or remain stranded for long.

Water and Snacks

No matter where you live in the country, it's always wise to keep a bottle or two of water and some non-perishable snacks on hand in your car. Having something to drink and munch on could make a dire situation less dangerous. Granola bars, crackers, fruit strips, and beef jerky are perfect options to go with.

Navigating Winter Emergencies With Ease

Getting through the season safe and sound on the roads is a lot easier to do when you are prepared for the worst. So, try to incorporate the suggestions above and get your car stocked as soon as possible! You will be glad you did if something bad were to occur.
