Easy Tips for a Back-Friendly Workspace
By Donna Stark
If you are taking steps to improve your overall health and wellness, make sure you aren't forgetting one of the most important parts of your day ... your job. Having a back-friendly workspace is essential if great health and a pain-free life are what you are shooting for. But what exactly does a back-friendly workspace mean? Take a look at the following recommendations from your local chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic on how you can achieve one.
Adjust Your Chair
Is sitting in a chair all day part of your job? If it is, listen up, because you may be doing your body a huge disservice without even realizing it! Your chair should promote proper posture because if it doesn't, you could be looking at a lot of pain and discomfort down the road. Give it a good look-over and make the following changes if needed.
- Upper arms and lower legs should be in a vertical position
- Forearms and thighs should be horizontal
- Wrists should be aligned with your keyboard (avoid holding them at an angle)
- The chair should provide lumbar support (if it doesn't, use a small pillow)
- Feet should be flat on the floor
Check Your Equipment
After you've adjusted your chair, it's time to turn your attention to a few of the things on your desk. Make sure your computer screen is at eye level to help reduce any strain that is placed on your neck and shoulders. It's also a good idea to keep your mouse and any other equipment you use daily close to your body and within easy reach. Doing so will help prevent all those annoying injuries that occur from sudden twists of the body.
Take Frequent Breaks
Once you have your workspace set up to your liking, don't forget to incorporate plenty of breaks throughout your day. Get up to move and stretch your back for a few minutes every hour or so. Take your phone calls while on your feet, go for a walk during your lunch break, and hold meetings outdoors, too, if you can. It doesn't take much to add more movement during your days.
