Meet The Doctors

Dr. Stanley Setzer, D.C. is a Clinic Director, Chiropractor at North Asheville

Dr. Stan Setzer joined The Joint Chiropractic in 2016 when he became part of the team at the North Asheville clinic, where he does the rewarding work of helping people as their local healthcare provider.

“The best thing about being in the chiropractic field is being able to help people with problems that other health practitioners aren’t able to,” he says. “I love building relationships with patients.”

Known to his patients as Dr. Stan, he is a product of Newton. He and his wife have three sons and a daughter, as well as a high-energy Australian shepherd named Marvel. When he’s not enjoying quality time with the family, he likes tending to his YouTube channel.

He earned his doctorate from Sherman College of Chiropractic after having received a bachelor’s degree in business administration from UNC Asheville.

His decision to become a chiropractor had a bit of a philosophical bent. “Like a lot of chiropractors and chiropractic patients, I had a lot of questions about my life and chiropractic seemed to be the answer,” he says.

One of the moments that validated that decision took place with a patient who was in a wheelchair “because she couldn’t walk,” he says. “A month later, she wasn’t even needing a cane to get around.”

In Case You Didn’t Know

Dr. Stan describes himself as “a movie and Hollywood fanatic,” so if he could bring together any four people for his ideal dinner party, he would sit down with directors Quentin Tarantino, George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, and actor Dwayne Johnson (aka The Rock).

One of his favorite books is IT by Stephen King: “It shows how people, even children, can accomplish great things if they are brave and have faith in each other.”

Around the house, he always makes sure there’s something cold to drink in the refrigerator “because who wants to drink anything at room temperature?”

Dr. Kenneth T. Hicks, D.C. is a Chiropractor at North Asheville

The North Asheville clinic location is proud that Dr. Ken Hicks joined its team in 2022 to provide important healthcare services to the local community.

“I always loved helping others and working at The Joint gives me the opportunity to do this every day,” he says. “I love that the job is physical -- as opposed to a desk job -- because it helps keep me healthy.”

Dr. Hicks worked previously in Roswell, Ga., Blacksburg, Va., Mannington, W.V., and Chattanooga and Johnson City, Tenn. Born in Roswell, he moved to North Carolina while in middle school.

He and his wife have “a sweet and silly black Lab that just seems to love everyone.” His hobbies include hiking and photography.

Dr. Hicks earned his doctorate of chiropractic from Life University in Marietta, Ga., after getting his bachelor’s in psychology at Appalachian State in Boone.

“After suffering from gastrointestinal issues for years with no good answers or solutions from the medical community, I saw a chiropractor and my chronic issue resolved itself in a matter of weeks,” he says. “This piqued my interest in becoming a chiropractor.”

It has led him to some great professional moments, including one early in his career. “I had a patient who could not lay down or she would throw up,” Dr. Hicks says. “I wasn’t sure what to do, so I propped up a table against the wall and had her lean on it so I could adjust her. It worked well and she greatly appreciated it. After a few weeks of adjusting her this way, she was able to lay on a regular table for her adjustments. She credited this to her chiropractic care.”

In Case You Didn’t Know

Dr. Hicks’ ideal dinner party would include comedians Steve Martin, Ellen DeGeneres, Robin Williams, and Kevin Hart “because laughter lightens our load.”

One of his most amazing adventures involved him and two wheels. “I took an off-road solo motorcycle trip across the U.S. called the TransAmerica trail,” Dr. Hicks says. “It added to my confidence regarding handling difficult situations by myself.” Perhaps that’s why the title of his biography would be called Little Adventures.

He always keeps peanut butter stocked in his refrigerator: “It’s an easy go-to snack I’ve enjoyed since I was a kid.”

A book that has been influential to Dr. Hicks was written by Victor E. Frankl titled Man’s Search for Meaning. “It showed me what we’re all capable of doing,” he says.

Dr. Kirsten West, D.C. is a Chiropractor at North Asheville

Dr. Kirsten West joined The Joint Chiropractic in 2021 when she became part of the team at the South Asheville clinic, where she does the rewarding work of helping people as their local healthcare provider.

“The best thing about being in the chiropractic field is helping people improve their quality of life naturally,” she says. “It’s gratifying to see people get hope that they can feel better.” Raised in the foothills around Wilkesboro, Dr. West grew up around “people who had no idea natural healthcare options were available.”

She earned her doctorate from Logan College of Chiropractic in Chesterfield, Mo., after getting a bachelor of science degree at North Carolina State. She worked previously in Winston-Salem, and Greenville, S.C.

In her spare time, Dr. West enjoys hiking, kayaking, and visiting breweries, and spending time with her Labrador mix, Chance..

She knew chiropractic was her calling when, as an athlete, chiropractors helped her heal from multiple injuries. It was further validated as a professional when she helped patients with ear infections simply by using the chiropractic adjustment. “Kids not having to get tubes in their ears is an awesome feeling,” she says.

In Case You Didn’t Know

Dr. West says her perfect dinner party would include singer Prince, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, and entertainers Betty White and Ellen DeGeneres.

She is a big fan of author Brene Brown: “She’s a great motivational writer and speaker.”

The one thing that Dr. West always keeps stocked in her refrigerator is hot sauce. “Breakfast,” she says, “is so much better with it.”

Dr. Teena Rowe, D.C. is a Chiropractor at North Asheville

Dr. Teena Rowe became part of The Joint Chiropractic’s team of local healthcare providers in 2022 when she began serving residents in the Asheville area, where she continues doing the work she finds so rewarding.

“The best thing about being in the chiropractic field is being able to give people a better quality of life,” she says. I love putting a smile on people’s faces. I also love promoting health in a holistic way because it can eliminate the amount of toxins we put in our body.”

Dr. Teena, as her patients know her, grew up in Elkhorn City, Ky., but began working in Asheville after getting her doctorate from Sherman College of Chiropractic in Boiling Springs, S.C. She previously earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology at the University of Pikeville in Kentucky.

“My first-ever adjustment was when I started chiropractic school,” she says. “Chiropractic was just something that felt right to me once I started studying it. Through chiropractic, I have helped two-day-old babies with colic, ear infections, constipation, et cetera. I have helped mothers get their baby to turn in the womb to avoid being breeched. I have helped people experiencing urinary incontinence. The options are endless with chiropractic. Each and every day, we get to help people with their quality of life no matter the situation.”

When she’s not working, Dr. Teena spends time with her Chihuahuas, Theodore and Eleanor. She also likes being outside and wants to travel the world.

In Case You Didn’t Know

If she could bring together any four people from history for her ideal dinner party, she would include Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor, and John Deacon. “I’m a Queen fan,” she says.

Her most amazing experience is skydiving. “As crazy as it sounds, it gave me a completely different outlook on life -- in a good way,” she says.

As a member of the Asheville community, Dr. Teena naturally gravitates toward exploring the area’s various craft beers. “When in Rome,” she says.

Dr. Zach Beckner, D.C. is a Chiropractor at North Asheville

Dr. Zachary Beckner became part of The Joint Chiropractic’s team of local healthcare providers in 2024, serving residents at the Asheville North clinic, doing the work he finds so rewarding.

“The best thing about being a chiropractor is the ability to help people live healthier, happier, and pain-free lives,” he says. “I enjoy the process of creating a community of people and offering natural ways of healing.”

Dr. Zach, as his patients call him, grew up in Murphy, N.C. and previously worked in Blue Ridge, Ga. His wife, Marielis, is also a chiropractor. The couple has a rescue dog named Mando.

When he’s not working, Dr. Zach enjoys hiking, camping, and playing basketball.

He attended Life University in Marietta, Ga., where he earned a bachelor’s degree in exercise science and a Doctorate of Chiropractic. Dr. Zach specialized in the study of strength and conditioning.

“I was doing a research project in fifth grade and the teacher put a number of careers in a hat, and I pulled out ‘chiropractic,’” he says. “After doing the research project on the career, I loved everything about it and the rest is history.”

Dr. Zach’s most memorable experiences as a chiropractor involve his work with pediatric patients. “It’s always amazing to see when a baby is coming in with a lot of issues such as torticollis, acid reflux, ear infections, difficulty feeding, and constipation,” he says. “After very gentle adjustments they start to function better.”

In Case You Didn’t Know

“I always have a secret stash of ice cream in case I get a sweet tooth,” he says.

If he could host a dinner party including four famous guests, Dr. Zach would invite Theodore Roosevelt, because “he is the reason we have national parks,” he says. He would also include actor Woody Harrelson, as well as the founder of chiropractic, DD Palmer, and his son, BJ Palmer.

Dr. Zach had a profound experience during chiropractic school when he herniated a disc in his low back. “Coming back from that injury is hard to do, but after all is said and done, I can relate to what my patients are going through and it enables me to better help them,” he says.

The Alchemist is a book that’s had a lasting impact on Dr. Zach.

Some of the best advice he’s ever received is: “Keep it simple, stupid.”

If he was asked for advice, Dr. Zach would offer: “Don’t keep doing the same thing over and expect a different outcome.”

Dr. Marlene Bassett joined the team of local healthcare providers at The Joint Chiropractic clinic in South Asheville in 2024 to continue doing the work she finds so rewarding.

“I first started practicing in Asheville immediately after Hurricane Helene devastated our community,” she says. “It has been such a powerful experience to help my patients in such a troubling time. Whether their pain is outside or inside, I can be a compassionate and helpful practitioner for them.”

Dr. Marlene, as her patients call her, gains satisfaction when she sees the immediate relief and joy experienced by her patients when they’re out of pain and on their way to wellness.

Originally from Montoursville, Penn., she grew up in a small town where chiropractic was not very well known. “I am lucky enough that my mom took me to a chiropractor to help with my growth spurts and pains when I was in the eighth grade,” she says. “Dr. Gregg Rhodes did a fantastic job of explaining everything and instilling in me a curiosity about chiropractic care. Once I went on to college, Dr. Sandy Gordon further motivated me to become a chiropractor and promote family wellness care.”

Dr. Marlene and her partner, Sam, moved to Asheville in 2024 after spending a year in a long-distance relationship between Florida and North Carolina. Sam’s passion is art and she works at a local gallery.

While playing division II basketball for East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Marlene earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Science. She got a Doctorate at Palmer College of Chiropractic in Port Orange, Fla.

“I always knew I wanted to be in the medical field because, even from my youth, I have enjoyed helping people feel healthy again,” she says. “I also take great pride in providing high quality, judgment-free, compassionate care to all individuals, no matter their race, gender, orientation, or background. Every person should have access to honorable and comfortable chiropractic care.”

One of Dr. Marlene’s most meaningful experiences as a chiropractor involved a significant finding she had during an examination. “After treating a 13-year-old boy I encouraged his mother to schedule an MRI,” she says. “They discovered a 6-centimeter brain tumor resulting in a life-saving surgery.”

In her free time Dr. Marlene enjoys hiking, camping, exploring local breweries, and taking in live music or comedy shows.

In Case You Didn’t Know

She always keeps coffee in her kitchen. “I’m not myself without my morning caffeine to start the day,” she says. “I also keep the ingredients for pizza on hand because it’s my favorite food!”

If she could plan the ideal dinner party, Dr. Marlene would invite President Barack Obama, Vice-President Kamala Harris, and sports legends Michael Jordan and Sue Bird.

One of the coolest experiences of Dr. Marlene’s life was a cross country road trip from Pennsylvania to Yellowstone National Park when she was in middle school. “We stopped at every national landmark that we could along the way,” she says. “This road trip taught me from an early age how important it is to get out of my small hometown and experience other cultures, landscapes, and see all that our beautiful world has to offer us. Nature is stunning and so important to be protected.”

Her favorite book is Life Isn't Binary: On Being Both, Beyond, and In-Between by Meg-John Barker and Alex Iantaffi. “It taught me that life isn’t as black and white as I thought,” she says. “There are multiple perspectives for everything we experience and see.”

Some of her best advice came from her mother. “My mom always told me to be proud of being tall and to keep my head up and shoulders back,” she says. “I feel it has given me many years of good posture and confidence!”

Her favorite advice for others is: “There’s more to life than your phone; remember to create screen time limits and get outside.”
